Symbols and Motifs By Amber Wang In Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, there are many motifs and symbols. According to Dictionary.com (2013), a motif is: â€Å"a recurring subject, theme, idea, etc., especially in a literary, artistic, or musical work.† On the other hand, a symbol is, according to the same website: â€Å"something used for or regarded as representing something else; a material object representing something, often something immaterial; emblem, token, or sign.† However, unlike motifs, it is usually not recurring. Both motifs and symbols are literacy devices commonly used by authors to help develop and add shape to the major themes within a text. In a way, they are similar to metaphors. For example, in Flowers for Algernon,†¦show more content†¦One of these characters is Hilda, a nurse who tended him at the hospital: â€Å"She said mabey they got no rite to make me smart because if god wantid me to be smart he would have made me born that way. † Keyes (1959, p.16) showing a traditionalist outlook that what the scientists were doing to Charlie was against God’s will. Fanny Birden, a woman who also worked at the bakery, shared Hilda’s opinion and considered Charlie’s intellectual growth similar to Adam and Eve with the forbidden fruit and the tree of knowledge, therefore evil. She believed that: â€Å". . . its not meant for man to know more than was given to him to know by the Lord in the first place. The fruit of that tree was forbidden to man.† Keyes (1959, p.107) Eventually, Charlie was punished by not only losing everything he learned, but regressing to a level lower than what he was before the surgery. The Bible was an important motif within the novel that foreshadowed Charlie’s intellectual journey in a way similar to another motif, Algernon. Algernon, the white lab mouse, could be considered as a parallel alter-ego of Charlie. He symbolised Charlie’s position as a toy of the scientists’ whim to be used in whatever way they liked. When the flag was first made, it symbolized freedom and opportunity for both citizens of American and the immigrants. There was the dream that America was a place of freedom, where you could do what you want, say what you want, and get a job or own your own land. For some, that dream became a reality, but for many of those immigrants, it has proven to be just that, a dream. Is this piece of cloth we hold in such high regard simply an ironic symbol or the American dream? Does it truly symbolize freedom and opportunity, or is it simply a token for those who want to flaunt their opinions and financial status.? Every person should have a certain amount of respect for this country and the opportunities and freedom it provides, but I dont agree†¦show more content†¦I have also come to realize that the reason I was taught to handle the American flag with such care was because schools across America, they try to teach children at an early age to have this kind of patriotism. School systems try to instill American calues in people at a young age because they know children will be the ones to shape the American future. In looking at the American flag as one of Americas artifacts, I have come to reconsider something I observed a couple of years ago. While traveling I have found that there are some similarities everywhere I go. I remember traveling through a few small rural towns in Massachusetts, where I live, for example. As i drove through one side of the town, I saw large beautiful flags, hung from beautiful houses. As I drove further those beautiful houses got scarcer and scarcer until that beautiful neighborhood was just a quick glimpse. I then began to see small houses and some tenements. Is is here that I did not see the American flag. Was it because the people there were not patriotic? Did they choose not to have a flag because they dont believe in America? In the United States of America the sports industry is booming. Parents are having their infants ski the day after they learn how to walk. Young children are learning how to play a variety of sports so they can figure out what they want their varsity letter in during high school. The problem is that these children are learning how to play the sport but they are not being taught the correct way to prepare their bodies for the sport. People may say that because younger children are not at the competitive level of sports they do not need proper warm-up and cool-down exercises. Trying to find the information is like expecting rain in a drought. Students should be allowed access more internet sites on school computer for class work. Teachers use multiple websites for teaching purposes. One of the major sites that are used Is YouTube. YouTube Is a great teaching tool for really every subject. You have math classes where it shows you step by step how to ork out an equation, English classes where you can listen to speeches, history classes where you watch historical events to eliminate the page by page reading which can be confusing at times, science classes where you watch videos over experiments, and Foreign languages which helps to learn the culture by visual seeing what happens. With access to YouTube you could go and look up the video at your own paste and be able to watch it as many times as needed to find the information you need. I tried looking up Information for an event in a history class and my answer was on a historical museum website and I could not access the website because the school had the website blocked. We know the schools have certain websites blocked because they are Inappropriate or highly distracting, yet I dont understand why they have blocked websites that are government websites or very appropriate websites that are strictly historical facts though. Growing up in a generation where technology is a major part of our daily ives we can get passed firewalls and blocked sites which if administration were to find out, disciplinary actions are taken upon you. We all have music on our phones so having the music websites are not a big deal. Also most people are Intelligent. Every student knows there is always someone watching and every site they visit is recorded, so why would they want to go on to dirty websites knowing they could be caught. As student president I would go to the school board and fight for our rights to be lifted on Internet access but mostly YouTube and government sites for academic purpose only.

Volunteering Builds Character I just turned thirteen; most girls my age babysit in their neighborhood, and for most of them, that’s as far as they reach out to help others in their communities. On the contrary, I have been a Girl Scout in the Arizona Cactus Pine Council for eight years now and have been doing a good deal of community service since then. Doing volunteer work for younger Girl Scouts, the SARRC walk for Autism and breast cancer awareness are just a selected few of the many projects I’ve done to improve my community. Doing community service has taught me how to be respectful, responsible, and mature; in addition I have met many amazing adults through my work. Volunteering has made me a lot more respectful to all adults in my life. A month or so back, my Girl Scout troop organized a camping trip for the younger girls in our community, the Arcadia section of Phoenix, Arizona. As a Girl Scout, we pledge to â€Å"Be Responsible† this rule has influenced the choices I’ve made for several years. One way I exercise responsibility is by offering to contribute to every event possible in my life. At meetings for my Girl Scout troop I’m offering to help almost constantly by checking dates, informing absent members of news, and so on. I love helping out because it makes you a part of the process and it gives you a true feeling of accomplishment after the matter. In addition, being responsible leads to more trust and with more trust comes more privileges. I’ve been told for most of my life that I am very mature, and I have begun to realize that it is a trait that comes naturally to me now. Each year since Kindergarten my troop has been involved in a program where we send shoeboxes full of toys, toiletries, and such to underprivileged kids in other countries around Christmas time. Also, we participate in the Christmas Angel program to help kids in our community around this time as well. Doing those things winter after winter made me realize that if I didn’t volunteer in programs like these, I wouldn’t be where I am today because I would have no idea how good I had it. Likewise, without some of the people I’ve met through volunteering I wouldn’t be who I am. Most kids just say that they look up to their parents, while I look up to my parents; I also look up to my two Girl Scout troop’s leaders. My parents have done a fantastic job raising me and my leaders have done none short of reinforced what they taught me. I think those for adults have kept me off of the said, â€Å"road of destruction† that most teenagers are led down for so long. The reason for that is that most kids have a parent to look up to but a lot of kids don’t have enough positive adults in their lives, which is why I feel so lucky. Another positive adult influence in my life in my life is a very cool woman I have recently met this year. Terry and her group of senior Girl Scouts helped my troop with a pink tent fundraiser for breast cancer. My troop met back up with Terry when she was the rock wall instructor for the encampment we had planned. In addition to Terry, there are many other adults in my life that are very righteous because of their work in a community. Doing community service has built a great deal of character on to my personality. I learn to be more respectful to adults after I was put in an adult position for a day, how to be responsible through my work as a Girl Scout, and I have reinforced my maturity by doing community service. So, volunteering has changed the way I view the world in a lot of very small ways. I think that more people in the United States should volunteer because it very well might change the way they act. From what I’ve learned doing or receiving community service can only help you as a person, it builds character.
